EQUINE EDUCATION PROGRAMS
1998

Using representatives of 40 different breeds of horses and world class equine facilities, the Kentucky Horse Park's Education Department is offering the following equine programs, workshops and classes. These programs also incorporate the resources of the equine industry. Discounts are offered for multiple enrollments.

Major Courses

Equine Management Program (5 days a week)
First Session: February 3 - June
26
Second Session: July 7 - November 25
Participants spend approximately two hours a day in lecture. The remainder of the day is spent caring for and learning skills directly with the horses. Included in the program are the Park’s mares and foals and its Mustangs. The curriculum covers stable management, grooming, horse handling, anatomy and physiology, herd health, reproduction, mare and foal care, and training and riding opportunities.

Tuition- $1000, plus books and insurance.

Short Courses and Seminars

1998 Schedule

Basic Driving   Feb. 21, 9-4:00 (hour lunch break)
Parts and types of harness. Learn to groom, harness, and hitch a team of draft horses and basic driving skills.
Class limited to 12. Instructor: Tracy Walker. Fee $45.

Obstacle Driving Feb. 28, 9-4:00 (hour lunch break)
Using a team of horses and wagon, learn to maneuver around and through various obstacles. After learning each of these you will work a complete obstacle course. Class limited to 6. (Students must have driving experience or have completed Basic Driving Class). Instructor: Tracy Walker. Fee $90.

Hoof Care Feb. 28, 9-12:00
Proper care to prevent problems and to maximize your horse’s use. What to look for in the well-trimmed foot; determining when shoeing is necessary. Instructor: Jeanene Tessari. Fee $30.

Single Horse Basic Driving March 7, 9-4:00 (hour lunch break)
From learning two different styles and uses of single driving harness to hooking and driving a single horse safely. Class limited to 8. Instructor: Tracy Walker. Fee $70.

Lameness March 21, 9-3:00 (hour lunch break)
Common causes, locations, diagnostic methods, treatments, and prevention. Therapeutic shoeing—what your farrier can or can’t do for various lamenesses and hoof problems, with emphasis on laminitis or grass founder.
Instructors: Margi Stickney, Jeanene Tessari. Fee $45.

Basic Horse Care and Handling Techniques   April 4, 9-3:00
(hour lunch break)

For those with little or no horse experience. Learn stall management, grooming and feeding. Practice safe haltering, tying, leading, and physical restraint. Instructors: Margi Stickney, Sherry Whetzel. Fee $40.

Foal Care and Handling    May 30, 9-12:00
Normal and problem foaling, basic health care, feeding, and handling.
Instructors: Margi Stickney, Sherry Whetzel. Fee $25.

*Youth Riding Program (Ages 10-18) Mon.-Friday; July 13 -24, 1-3:30pm.
Students will learn to catch, lead, groom, and tack; stall management; and the basics of balanced seat riding.
Instructors: Todd Waronicki, Margi Stickney. Fee $200.

Basic Health Care    Aug. 1, 9-3:00 (hour lunch break)
Basic herd health, deworming, vital signs, recognizing emergency situations, bandaging, first aid, and health problems such as colic and founder. Instructors: Margi Stickney, Sherry Whetzel. Fee $40.

Psychology and Behavior of the Horse    Sept. 19, 9-12:00
Instinct and motivation, temperament and intelligence, communication, why and how the horse acts and reacts.
Instructor: Margi Stickney. Fee $25

Equine Massage Sept. 26, 9-12:00
Through demonstration and lecture learn the basic techniques of massage.
Instructor: Diana Uphaus, E.S.M.T. Fee $30.

Transportation and Trailer Loading Oct. 3, 9-12:00
Methods of shipping and paperwork required; selection and maintenance of towing vehicles and trailers; tips on safety and effectively training your horse to load.
Instructors: Margi Stickney, Jeanene Tessari. Fee $30.

Starting the Horse Riding Oct. 17, 9-12:00
Preparing the horse for riding. How to tie, groom, tack, longe, line drive, and ride.
Instructor: Todd Waronicki. Fee $25.

Basic Driving Oct. 24, 9-4:00 (hour lunch break)
Repeat of Feb. 21 class—see above.

Training the Horse for Driving Nov. 7, 9-4:00 (hour lunch break)
Learn proper methods of ground training, harness training, line driving, hitching and driving.
Instructor: R.K. Walker. Fee $45.

Hoof Care Nov. 14, 9-12:00

INSTRUCTIONS
Pre registration is required for these classes. Fees include admission to the Horse Park. Classes meet rain (snow) or shine! Because class size is limited, we encourage you to register early. If a class does not fill, the decision to cancel will be made by noon on the Monday before the class is scheduled to be held. You will be notified by phone and your fee will be refunded. If a class is filled when your registration is received, you will be notified by phone and your registration will be refunded. All other fees are non refundable. Those programs with an (*) require additional registration or application materials. Wear comfortable clothing and appropriate shoes or boots. Tennis shoes are not recommended when working around horses. All classes check in at the Park’s Visitor Information Center fifteen minutes before the class is scheduled to begin. Teaching Staff

Barbara Dietrich, Director of Education
A.B. Syracuse University, M.S. Texas Tech University. Eight years with the Kentucky Horse Park, fifteen years as a secondary science teacher, University Administrator, and Natural Science Center Director.

Margi Stickney, Instructor
B.A. Otterbein College, horsemanship program, Morehead State University. Worked with broodmares, yearlings, stallions, exercise rider, licensed trainer and riding instructor.

Sherry Whetzel, Instructor
Twenty years experience as a barn manager, Horse Drawn Tour supervision, driver, groom and has also worked sales. Seventeen years at the Horse Park.

Todd Waronicki, Riding Instructor, Big Barn Manager
Twenty five years experience riding and training in all aspects of horsemanship. Eight years at the Horse Park.

R.K. Walker, Director of Equine Operations
Thirty years of experience in breeding, foaling, breaking, and training horses for both riding and driving. Has successfully shown in western and draft classes and judged western, draft, and miniature shows.

Peggy Carroll, Breeds Barn Manager and Supervisor of the Parade of Breeds
Nineteen years experience as a barn manager; riding instructor in hunt, dressage, and western; breeding; foaling; sales; eventing; and showing. Seventeen years at the Park.

Tracy Walker, Horse Drawn Tour Manager
Sixteen years experience as a driver of both draft and carriage horses and twenty years experience in breeding, training, showing, and working with all breeds of horses.

Dave Gibson, Farrier
Graduate of the Kansas Horse Shoeing School. American Farrier Association; Certified Master Farrier by the Brotherhood of Working Farmers' Association, Licensed by the Kentucky State Racing Commission. Eighteen years experience as a Farrier.

Linda Walker, Harness Maker
Fourteen years experience as a harness maker. Seventeen years of equine experience in breeding, foaling, endurance riding and team roping. Fifteen years as a show announcer.
